The local thatched village pub is The Sailor’s Return. which is located half-mile along the lane, passing the village green and crossing the ford. The pub offers a good selection of local real ales and home-cooked food, served in the bar and restaurant. There is plenty of parking space and a large grassed area with seating. There are several other pubs nearby and we provide an up-to-date list of local pubs, tea rooms and restaurants which we enjoy or have had recommended to us by previous guests.
South Dorset has much to offer: the Isle of Purbeck, Swanage, Corfe Castle, coastal and cliff-top walks, rocky coves with rock pools and crystal clear water, pebble and sand beaches., all along the Jurassic Coast, which is part of the World Heritage Site. We are also in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a site of Special Scientific Interest. There are many walks direct from Limekiln House into the pristine coastal countryside, no houses or vehicles to mar the views or spoil the peace and quiet. We provide laminated maps of suggested walks in the local area for you to take out with you. A traffic-free stroll to the cliff top at Durdle Door takes about 40 minutes. Lulworth Cove is a further 15 minutes walk along the coastal path. The coastal car parks are about five minutes by road. The footpaths, farm tracks and bridleways are open to the public and pass ancient barrows and long-disused farm dwellings. The views from the ridge between Limekiln and the cliffs are spectacular, reaching inland to central Dorset and across to the Isle of Wight and Portland Bill.
There are also many places to explore and to visit just inland of Limekiln House, such as Moreton, with Lawrence of Arabia's grave, gardens, tea-room, unique church and a shallow river ford with a long footbridge leading to many wooded walks. Close by is Lawrence of Arabia's cottage, the Tank Museum at Bovington and Monkey World.
We have lived in the Lulworth Cove area for twenty five years and can recommend many of the best places, especially if you wish to avoid the crowds in the summer and to experience the real south Dorset.
